Pap Smear / Thin Prep

Pap smear or Thin Prep is a procedure to test for cervical cancer in women. The test involves collecting cells from your cervix – the lower, narrow end of your uterus that’s at the top of your vagina. This test should be taken as part of your regular health screening especially if you are sexually active.

WHO and WHY should you do a Pap Smear / Thin Prep?

Ladies starting from age 25 are recommended to get a pap smear every 3 years. If you are at higher risk of cancer, you are strongly advised to discuss with our doctor when will be an ideal time to start cervical cancer screening.

Women aged 30 and older should consider HPV testing instead of the conventional Pap smear.

If you have certain risk factors, our doctors may recommend more of these tests within a shorter time interval, regardless of your age.

Such risk factors include but not limited to:

  • A previous diagnosis of cervical cancer or a Pap smear results that showed pre-cancerous cells

  • Exposure to diethylstilbestrol (DES) before birth

  • HIV infection

  • Weakened immune system due to organ transplant, chemotherapy or chronic corticosteroid use

  • A history of smoking

Preparation for your Pap Smear / ThinPrep

If you are still menstruating, you should have your Pap Smear/ThinPrep one week after your monthly cycle begins, or up to a week before your next menstrual period begins. If you have already menopause, you can undergo a Pap smear/ThinPrep at any time.

The activities and products mentioned above may obscure or wash away any abnormal cells. Hence, you are strongly advise to avoid these activities and refrain from using these products to ensure adequate, quality cell sample are collected. Other factors that may affect Pap smear/ThinPrep results include cervix or vaginal infection and the use of certain medications. Do inform the doctor beforehand if you are consuming any medication currently during the consultation.
